Candidates should have (a) a good honours degree (1st or 2nd class honours) in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Forensic Science (major subject for the Bachelor Degree should be Chemistry, Biochemistry or Forensic Science, i.e. with 2/3 of the total number of units or papers taken in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Forensic Science) from a Hong Kong university or equivalent and a Master Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Food Science or Environmental Science from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; OR a good honours degree (1st or 2nd class honours) in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Forensic Science from a Hong Kong university or equivalent and two years’ relevant post-graduate experience; AND (b) a pass result in the Aptitude Test in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE); AND (c) met the language proficiency requirements of ‘Level 1’ results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the CRE or equivalent.
[Note: Candidates’ result in the Aptitude Test (AT) paper are classified as pass or fail, while the results of the Use of Chinese (UC) and Use of English (UE) papers are classified as ‘Level 2’, ‘Level 1’ or ‘Fail’, with ‘Level 2’ being the highest. Grade ‘C’ or above and Grade ‘D’ in Use of English of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) or equivalent, are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UE paper of the CRE. Grade ‘C’ or above and Grade ‘D’ in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the HKALE are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UC paper of the CRE. Applicants with an overall band of 6.5 or above with no subtest score below band 6 obtained in the same sitting in the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) within the two-year validity period of the test are considered as having met the English language proficiency requirement in item (c) of the above entry requirements. The IELTS test result must be valid on the commencement day of the application period, i.e. 27 February 2015. For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (BL) and promoting a culture of learning of the BL in the community, assessment of BL knowledge will be included in the recruitment for all civil service jobs. Results of the BL test for degree/professional grades will be one of the considerations to assess the suitability of a candidate but will not affect his/her eligibility for applying for civil service jobs. Mainly deployed on conducting scientific, analytical and investigatory work, supervising and training staff and other management duties in Government Laboratory or in other Government departments. He/She may be subject to cross-divisional postings in Government Laboratory.
Terms of Appointment:
A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, he/she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.

Completed application forms [G.F. 340 (Rev. 3/2013)] together with the copies of (i) official transcripts of academic qualifications and (ii) proof of relevant working experience should be sent to the enquiry address on or before the closing date for application. Please mark on the envelope “Application for the post of Chemist”. Application forms are obtainable from any Public Enquiry Service Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department. The said form can also be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau’s website at http://www.csb.gov.hk. On-line application can also be made through the Civil Service Bureau’s website. Candidates who apply on-line should submit the copies of all relevant documents to the enquiry address on or before 19 March 2015. The online application number should be quoted on the envelope and the copies of supporting documents. If candidates fail to provide the supporting documents as requested on or before 19 March 2015, their applications will not be considered. Candidates who are selected for interview will normally receive an invitation in about eight to ten weeks from the closing date for application. Those who are not invited for interview may assume that their applications are unsuccessful.
