(a) a Master degree or above in Pharmacognosy, Chemistry of Medicinal Plants, Phytochemistry, Medicinal Plant Sciences or a related subject from a university of Hong Kong, or equivalent Notes 1 and 2;
(b) at least four years’ relevant full-time experience in the identification of active ingredients contained in the medicinal plant, and possess in-depth professional knowledge in the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new chemical from natural sources Note 3;
(c) with a year of experience on providing training in relevant fields of Chinese medicines is preferred;
(d) excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical and organisation skills; and
(e) proficiency in written Chinese and English, and good command of spoken Cantonese, Putonghua and English.

A Pharmacognosist is mainly deployed –
(a) to assist in setting up and designing the various laboratories under the Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute;
(b) to organise and provide capacity building training and technology transfer activities to the Chinese medicines trade, research institutions, etc.
(c) to assist in the development and establishment of appropriate marker substances for identification and assay of medicinal plants or proprietary Chinese medicines;
(d) to vet scientific reports from research institutes in order to facilitate the enhancement of the scientific research results / outcomes;
(e) to assist in resolving problems encountered when difficulties arises during research projects ;
(f) to monitor research institutions’ deliverables / reports in research protocols;
(g) to identify the potential need of pharmacognostical analysis and assist in developing related projects; and
(h) to carry out any other duties as assigned by senior officers.

Terms of Appointment:
Successful candidates will be appointed on non-civil service contract terms for 12 months. Renewal of contract will be subject to the service need of the Department and the performance of the candidate.
Candidates appointed are eligible for 14 days' paid annual leave. Other benefits such as rest days, statutory holidays (or substituted holidays), annual leave, maternity leave, paternity leave and sickness allowance, where appropriate, will be granted in line with the Employment Ordinance (Cap. 57).

(g) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions / Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. (h) The period of notification of recruitment examination and / or interview may be longer when a large number of applications are received or when there are other complications requiring a longer processing time for the applications.
